About

At the Squat and Gobble

When I was a kid I was one damned picky eater. I hated everything: tomatoes, onions, olives, mayonnaise, avocados, mustard, mushrooms, cream cheese, sour cream, anything spicy, bell peppers…let’s just say I think I subsisted on Kraft macaroni and cheese for a few years there. In college, I got a little more experimental but still had no idea about cooking techniques or good ingredient combinations. I think I still subsisted on macaroni and cheese for awhile.

A few years ago, I suddenly found myself obsessed with cooking. I started to read everything I could get my hands on about traditional cooking methods, and to seek out new and untried ingredients. I started spending every night, and many afternoons, in the kitchen. And I started reading food blogs. (About the same time, too, my brothers, who live over 3,000 miles away from me, started their own kitchen experimentation, and yeah, sometimes I think it would be fun to open a restaurant with them…except we’d probably kill each other within the space of a week. But I do love cooking with them, and hope to do more of it when I move back to California!)

I’ve been writing here for over two years now, and although my graduate school responsibilities certainly inhibit the time I have for cooking and baking, I try to post something at least once a week. I try to eat and cook with as little processed food as I can (although I still have a weakness for macaroni and cheese from a box), and I like to try to cook locally grown foods in season (although Boston in February makes that very difficult). Sometimes I do elaborate, time-consuming things, and sometimes dinner takes fifteen minutes, but I always try to share what works, what doesn’t, and whatever bits of history and foodlore I can pick up on the way.

I love to hear suggestions, too, because I think food is best when it’s experimental and playful, and I think there is very little you can do wrong in the kitchen. (Beet and garbanzo bean pasta, though, is wrong. Trust me.) So please do leave comments or send me email.

I absolutely love reading your blog, and get great ideas to build off of. To be quite honest, I’m experimenting with a Balsamic Chicken Pizza for our new pizzeria menu. Must I bestow credit unto you in small, italicized font at the bottom of the menu? ;^)

    Hey Laura,

Well thanks for commenting back :). I just read your ‘about me’ and noticed that you mentioned moving back to California. I’m actually originally from CA, lived there for about 17 years total (I’m 23 now :)! I’ll have to read more of your blog to see if you mention why you moved to Boston from CA. I bet you miss the perfect weather :), I know I do. It’s good meetin’ ya! I’ll be dropping by again soon.

    Sophie :)

I recently added your blog to my blog roll and am really enjoying it. Oddly enough we have quite a few things in common (that list of foods you wouldn’t eat as a kid is almost exactly the same as mine but I refused pasta too! My poor mother!) I’m now in California near my family, but was once 1) in grad school where I learned how to cook, 2) have threatened to open a restaurant with my sisters but know we’d kill each other, and 3) spent most of my life on the east coast in CT, NY and VA.! Looking forward to more posts!

    I love your blog!

Everything I have made so far from it, has been amazing (albeit only brownies and chicken florentine, but I have high hopes lol)! Keep coming up with fun new inventive dishes :)

Thank you! I can’t believe I’ve been doing this for coming up on 3 years, and that when I started, I barely knew how to boil water.
